Why Wales is different
In England, many people get an ADHD assessment faster through Right to Choose, which lets them pick an NHS-funded provider. That right is part of the NHS in England. If you live in Wales and your GP is in Wales, it does not apply to you.
Your NHS route in Wales is a GP referral to the adult or children's neurodevelopmental service run by your health board:
- Aneurin Bevan University Health Board
- Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board
- Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
- Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board
- Hywel Dda University Health Board
- Powys Teaching Health Board
- Swansea Bay University Health Board
NHS ADHD assessment waiting times vary across health boards in Wales, with some adults reporting waits of anywhere from one to ten years. For many, this means facing years of uncertainty without the answers or support they need. See the latest figures for each board on our ADHD waiting times in Wales map.
BBC Wales has reported on the experiences of women who have turned to private ADHD assessments after being told they could face lengthy NHS waiting times. For people across Wales, a private ADHD assessment can offer a quicker route to understanding their ADHD, getting answers and accessing personalised support.
What a private assessment with ADH-Me includes
- An in-depth clinical interview with an ADHD Nurse Specialist and Independent Prescriber (RMN, INP)
- Rating scales (Conners' for children and young people, ASRS for adults)
- The QbCheck online test of attention, impulsivity and activity
- A detailed written report following NICE guideline NG87, and a feedback session
- A letter for your GP, written to support shared care if you go on to medication
After diagnosis, many people find they have nobody to prescribe. A diagnosis alone does not provide medication. Our ADHD specialist is an independent prescriber, so if medication is right for you we can start it, adjust the dose with you, then write to your GP. Read our guide to shared care in Wales before you book anywhere.
Online across Wales, in person in South and West Wales
Most assessments and reviews work well by video, so you do not need to travel. In-person appointments across South and West Wales, including school-based appointments, can be arranged subject to availability.
